It's that time of year again - when things get really busy! So here's a quick post with a few quick descriptions. :-)
A favorite spring time activity is playing in the creek that flows from our pond.
Ten lambs born this spring. And a bonus lamb born yesterday. More on that one later.
Usually we spend a lot of time with the baby lambs, playing with them and gentling them. This year they were born over a month later than usual and things were already getting busy outdoors. We just didn't have the time to spend with them. We don't have names for most of them and I can't even tell who belongs to who.
Took Lena on a walk to visit my sister, who lives a mile and a half down the road. Lena and her cousin had a great time in puddles on the walk home. That's Lena with the yellow boots.
Spent Mother's Day at a nearby state park. It was overcast but warm.
The girls made a teeter-totter on the beach.
Climbing the rocks toward the lighthouse. Lena overcame some fears moving from rock to rock.
Lena found this neat rock that came apart like a sandwich.
The kids (and I!) had been missing our cat Snowflake since she died back in February. I scheduled a "Cat Cuddling" visit for Lena at the Humane Society because she was missing her kitty so much. The very next day Matt came home from inspecting a customer's hardwood floor and showed me some pictures of a cat. "It's ours if we want it." Apparently this couple was watching their daughter's cat but she lives in an apartment and they travel too much to keep it. So, Ravi came to live with us.
It took him several days to warm up to his new home but now he's feeling much more comfortable here. Right now he's sleeping on Clare's bed, much to Clare's delight. He is such a honey and he loves the kids.
Life always gets really busy on a farm in the spring and this year is no exception. We picked up 95 chicks (80 meat birds and 15 new laying hens) and 6 turkeys this week and got them settled in the barn. We also now have a bottle-baby lamb because the lamb born yesterday has a young mama who wants nothing to do with it. So that's one more thing to add to the chore list.
We're also adding a puppy to the family on Sunday! That's going to be an adjustment after calm, well-behaved Molly. We went down to pick it out last weekend. It's a Shollie (in this case, 3/4 border collie; 1/4 German shepherd). We decided on a boy. Now to decide on a name!
Saturday was a beautifully warm day and the pond was swim-able. The kids had a blast. Clare's cousin had slept over the night before and they had fun catching the many toads swimming all over.
Karl got a new inflatable raft this spring.
Our new beach is so nice!
Went to weed in the greenhouse and discovered a lot of lambs-quarter which is healthier than spinach though it's mostly considered a weed. Lena ate so much her teeth turned green but we cooked the rest due to its oxalic acid content. Since we didn't finish weeding in there, we'll probably find a lot more the next time we look!
Lena holds the box of laying hens. She's a pro at this by now!
Helping to plant potatoes.
Big K has been home from school with the worse runny nose cold ever. Poor kid. I had to work in the garden so he rested nearby in his hammock.
