Spring, finally!

Clare made her first pie a couple weeks ago - raspberry.  She loves to bake and thanked me several times for letting her make it herself.  (She did get some assistance rolling the crust and getting it into the pie plate, but not much.)

Clare likes to put her own spin on things - she made a lattice top crust and rolled an extra strip into a rose.  I'm impressed by her ingenuity and the fact that she likes baking as an 8 year old.  I sure didn't!

We did three maple syrup boils this spring.  Lena just loved the maple sap - the lightly sugared water straight from the tree.  We filled her cup with it several times during the day.

Our last day of sapping was actually quite miserable - fresh snow and highs of 34 for the day.  I guess it could have been worse: colder, or raining.

I took the girls out in the woods quite often this spring. One day they found a huge wet area and at first they just poked at the ice and water with sticks.  By the time we left, their snow pants, boots, and mittens were soaked but they had so much fun.  I always remember my mom at times like this who let us play in the rain and stomp in the puddles and get messy and dirty - so long as we took our wet things off in the laundry room!  But she was never one to pass up an adventure and I hope my kids won't either.

The snow is finally gone!  We did have a depressing return of snow last week - about 3 inches of heavy wet stuff that stuck around for two days.  It is so hard to return to snow after bare ground!

We like to call this our "big sky".  Never thought I'd like to have a huge open field behind my house but now I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Claire is getting so big! I too loved to bake at her age, though I was never given permission to do anything solo until I had taken home ec class as a 6th grader. I think my mom was too busy to teach me, but she would let me help here and there. I need to do a better job of letting the boys help. They all want to and I just want to get it done and over with! Ha ha! We will be up at Big T in mid-August this year; hopefully you guys will be around again. I'd love to stop over with the crew. :)
