Laura and I had grand plans to go backpacking from Munising to Grand Marais along the Lakeshore Trail at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. We still followed our plan, though I certainly hadn't thought we'd get that much rain!
We left Laura's cabin in Seney on Wednesday the 19th, which turned out to be our only warm and beautiful day of the trip. We hiked from Munising Falls to Potato Patch, a rather boring campground a steep hill hike up from Miners Beach. If we hadn't gotten going to late that day (due to my driving down from Hancock) we could have gone swimming in Lake Superior. If I had known it would be our only chance to go swimming, I might have gone anyway!

That night, I could hear rain hammering our tent roof. Finally at 7:30 it let up enough to pack up a soaking tent and hit the trail. We stopped for breakfast at Mosquito Falls, about 3 miles down the trail.

I love how Lake Superior is so amazingly clear!

The waves were phenomenal. Our hike was a windy one, but at least it wasn't raining on this day. (The day before, rain and mist pelted into us from the direction of the lake, completely soaking us. A man in his minivan took pity on us and offered us two Hershey's chocolate bars. Chocolate never tasted so good!!)
The lakeshore, viewed from a point shortly after the Au Sable Lighthouse:

On our last two days, we walked around Grand Marais and checked on our old house, just visible across the bay.

It's changed a little, but the same four cottonwood trees and chain-link fence are still there.

Although the temperature never warmed up again (we were still wearing long pants, long-sleeved shirts -- more than one! -- and jackets on our last day) Laura and I made the best of our trip and definitely had a fun time.

The pictures are beautiful. I especially like the one of your packs sitting on the shore, with lake superior beyond. I'm glad you gals had fun despite the weather... it's been a crazy summer weather-wise, hasn't it?
