"Spring Break"

This is the second official day of spring break (although the kids have been off of school all of last week too, due to COVID-19).

Unfortunately, with everything shut down, we are not doing our mini water park vacation.  We were supposed to leave yesterday and stay for two nights.  We've chosen to do a few other special things instead, like special meals (corn dogs for the kids), ice cream in cones for dessert, baking cookies, more family time, etc.

Today was the first day of Michigan's "Stay Home, Stay Safe" executive order.  We've also had multiple days of "quarantine" prior to this, but I'm not keeping track.  For a home-body introvert like me, staying home has been very nice.  I feel blessed to have a nice home and 40 acres of backyard playground to explore when the kids get crazy indoors.  I have nothing to complain about!  But there are many people to pray for as people are sick and dying, healthcare workers are struggling right now with insane hours and lack of sleep, unemployment keeps climbing as nonessential businesses close, and my friends who live in small houses or apartments are going crazy with all their children home and nowhere to go.  I almost feel guilty that we are thoroughly enjoying ourselves.

Today was a perfect day for "crust" skiing - my absolute favorite.  And our pond was safe to go on - the first time we dared venture onto it all year.  The kids spent 3 beautiful hours this morning on the pond.

On the pond.

Standing on a small frozen "bay" of the pond.

Nora, our little tree climber.

Karl skied here and then felt a bit stuck.

Nora at it again.

Karl asked, "Since we're not going on our vacation, can we have a picnic on the pond?"  So we did.

One of the favorite activities was sledding on the smooth surface of the pond.  Matt helped launch them and their sleds fairly flew across the snow.

I think this day made up for some of the fun they missed at the water park.  And personally I would rather be out in the sun on the snow than indoors.  We'll see what the weather brings this week, if we'll get more pond adventures or if the snow and ice will melt.

We cancelled our Spring Break plans as well (though our official spring break is next week, not this week). FuXi and I were supposed to be in Grand Rapids on Monday and Tuesday for appointments and then on Wednesday we were all going to drive to Kentucky where we had a cabin rented in the Red River Gorge area. We were all looking forward to exploring the gorge and enjoying the hot tub outside our cabin.. but staying home is the right thing to do. I hope you all stay healthy and happy during this time. :)
