Halloween and beyond

Another very late post, no surprise there.

I don't have any photos of the kids' carved pumpkins from this year!  We carved them outdoors on the last beautiful Saturday before Halloween and then didn't get back outside to take pictures once it was dark.  We were able to grow enough pumpkins to give away to our local cousins again, and our kids had their pick of the largest.  Clare's was so big I couldn't lift it.  I had to transport Karl's in a wheelbarrow.  Here's Lena eating snow from the top of Clare's pumpkin.

My little panda:

An owl, Batman, a tiger, and the panda:

Clare made her owl costume, almost completely by herself.  She made the mask by herself and for the wings I helped her cut the fabric to size, sew it to double thickness, and then she glue-gunned all the felt feathers on.  I'm always impressed with her creativity.  Next year she wants to be a peacock. If she sticks with that idea, it could be a very fun costume.  Our local VFW gives out cash prizes for their costume contest.  Clare chose to trick-or-treat longer this year, but next year she wants to compete.

The sheep were outdoors late into the fall this year, foraging under the snow and being supplemented with hay.  The girls' morning chore was running hay and fresh water out to them.  (Except they actually rode in the sled and I did the running, or rather, walking.)

Clare made a turkey pinata for Thanksgiving this year.  She filled it with leftover Halloween candy and shared with her cousins.

We had wild turkeys visit us multiple times (after hunting season was over, of course.)  They enjoyed searching for fallen bird seed and ate the yard apples that had fallen on the driveway.  One day when we got home from town, Nora saw their tracks on the sidewalk: "The turkeys have been here!"

We "found" our Christmas tree behind our log pile.  Matt wants them out of the way for cutting wood.  So last year we picked the best tree, this year the second best, and if we get our tree from there next year it will really be a Charlie Brown one.  This year's tree was skinny-topped and fat-bottomed.  Karl did most of the cutting, with Nora taking a short turn.  Clare was on skis and couldn't get close enough.

Every year we make "gingerbread" houses with graham crackers and this year I was excited because I found an easy way to cut the crackers to make a real-looking house.  But of course only one kid wanted to do it that way.  Lena made a stable:

Karl made a house with a woodshed/lean-to.

A little hyped up on sugar, perhaps:

Clare made a horse arena, with barrel racing and jumping competitions:

Way to go Clare on that costume, and Karl's gingerbread house is amazing too! It's fun to see all the pictures of your sweet family. I was hoping to see a pic of your decorated Charlie Brown tree too! ;)
