Christmas and beyond

Christmas was a bit crazy this year as we spent Christmas Eve with my family and then decided to leave at 7:30 that evening to drive to MN in hopes of beating the ice storm that was supposed to hit parts of MN and WI on Christmas Day.  I took a lot of pictures in MN but unfortunately, I didn't get many good ones of the kids.

When we returned home four days later, it was to a 45 degree house (our propane back-up in the basement keeps pipes from freezing but that is about it).  We lit a fire in our living room fireplace to help get the house warm quickly.  The kids didn't seem to care because Santa had come while we'd been gone.

Loved having a real tree this year!

Wood stoves are SO cozy.

This little lady refused to open any presents until two days after we got home.  I don't know if she was tired of present-opening or what.

One of Clare's presents was a baking set, with adorable little cookie cutters and her own rolling pin and rolling mat.  She LOVES to bake and was excited to have her own tools.  She might need a little help turning on the mixer when the bowl is full of flour though:

Clare and Nora making cookies:

My sister Laura and I took a Christmas break snowshoe outing around the property.  It wasn't easy putting snowshoes on while bending around this big belly.  Just LOVE our property in the winter:

And I finally figured out (after watching a video on some aspects of homesteading) how to properly hard-boil farm-fresh eggs.  You don't actually boil them, but instead steam them for 20-22 minutes after the water comes to a boil.  The difference is amazing - the eggs actually peel without the shells crumbling into a million pieces and taking half the egg with them.

And listening to the kids during snack time today (always interesting to hear what they take away from what they're learning):

Karl: Nora, Jesus died for your sins.

Clare: Nora, if you believe in Jesus you get to go to heaven.  And guess what?  There's no night there. That means you don't have to go to bed and you don't have to take naps!  Isn't that exciting, Nora?

Nora with those pigtails is just about the cutest thing ever! I need Clare to come over and give Bereket some baking lessons. Haha. But seriously, she has an aversion to the kitchen. I need to make sure to remember to let her future special guy know that he won't be able to count on her for cooking or baking. She needs to marry a chef. :)
