WI Camping

Over the weekend of June 14-16, we camped at a state forest campground in Wisconsin with Matt's sister and her family.  We all had a great time despite a little rain (torrential downpour with high winds and thunder and lightning Saturday night) and a few bugs.

As it turned out, our campsite "on the lake" was not close to the lake at all.  The lake was obscured by trees and accessed only by walking through thick woods down to the marshy, tree-lined shoreline.  Apparently the beautiful white-sand beach photos I'd seen online were for another lake nearby.  The sites were gorgeous nonetheless, with tall pines and thick underbrush and plenty of wintergreen berries for snacking on.

It was so good to see Clare running around, digging in the dirt, playing with sticks and rocks, splashing in the water, playing with sand.  Last year it took an entire week to get her comfortable playing around our campsite.  (Not sure why, exactly.)  Karl took right to the outdoors, handling little pine branches and braving the mosquitoes.

On Saturday it was overcast and cool so we took the kids canoeing instead of going to the beach.  Karl screamed for the first 20 minutes of our paddle before finally falling asleep.  We put him in his life jacket and then into the car seat to prop him up a bit and give him a sun shade.

Clare LOVED the canoe ride.  She spent most of it with her hand dangling in the water.

Zonked out on the gunwale...  I started talking to her and then realized when she didn't answer that she must have fallen asleep.

Sunday was a gorgeously warm, sunny day -- perfect for swimming at the picnic beach on the nearby lake that actually did have sandy beaches.   Karl took a nap under the shade tent while Clare played with her cousins and sand toys.

It was hard to leave -- the sign of a good trip.
