Fall Gardening
Gardens are definitely a live and learn experience. For example, we learned that planting potatoes in our rocky soil isn't really worth it. Money-wise, that is.
At the same time, it was really fun to dig them up and eat potatoes that came from our own garden. Plus, it's a great experience for Clare, to see where potatoes (and carrots, broccoli, beans, etc.) come from. Matt would dig the potatoes out and she would put them in the bucket. She helped me later with carrots: pulling them out of the ground then taking the green tops off and stacking them for the compost pile.
We dug up the front yard broccoli plants this weekend. The backyard garden is still producing delicious tasting broccoli, so we'll leave those in awhile longer. Clare liked to pretend she was pushing the wheelbarrow.
I love having a garden and acting like we're living "in the country" with a wheelbarrow and all, though in reality we live on an average sized lot in town, where passersby often stare at our broccoli and cucumber plants and a few stop to ask questions.
