The Fair

I had been looking forward to taking Clare to our county fair all week, telling her about the rides and the animals, etc.  Then this afternoon (the day we had planned to go because rides were only $1) it started pouring rain around noon and kept up for almost 5 hours.

Finally around 5 pm we checked the radar and it looked like most of the rain had passed.  We popped Clare in the stroller and walked the mile or so to the fairgrounds.

First stop: Beef on a Bun for dinner.

Next up were the rides.  We bought three tickets for her, figuring three rides is plenty for a two year old. After watching the carousel for awhile, Clare decided she did want to ride it after all.  She rode with a straight face most of the way so I couldn't tell if she liked it.  But as it was slowing down, she said, "More ride!"  We did end up riding the merry-go-round twice.

Trying to point out Daddy as we went around.

Clare did a great job holding on and keeping a steady seat the whole time.  Maybe I'll have a horseback riding partner someday?

Clare surprised us both by wanting to ride by herself on the train (no adults allowed).  I had a momentary panicky thought of her bursting into tears halfway through the ride.  You never know with a toddler.  But she loved it and didn't want to get off when the ride came to an end.

After the rides we headed over to the small and large animal barns where Clare got to see ducks, rabbits, chickens, horses, sheep, goats, and cows.  She was starting to space out by this point, the excitement on top of a slight cold making her more tired than normal.

By 8 pm, thunder was again booming in the sky and the gray-black clouds overhead looked menacing, so we bought a pretzel to satisfy both my appetite and Clare's and headed for home.

We had packed a lot into three hours.  After a story and a few songs, Clare promptly fell asleep.  I'm already looking forward to next year's fair, wondering how Clare will respond to the rides when she's a big three-year-old, and envisioning our new little babe peering curiously from the stroller.
