This Thing

...said affectionately, and referring to our lovable -- and now very expensive -- pup, Molly.  She's not valuable to anyone but us, but she has been VERY expensive.

Two weeks ago she came down with something called "bloat" which, I discovered, is the second leading killer of dogs after cancer.  Funny no one tells you this at the vet's office when you go in for check-ups; they should give out a little pamphlet and tell you what signs to watch for, etc.

It's usually fatal within hours so of course I sent Matt to the vet with her, agonizing over whether my dear puppy would be okay. Neither of us thought to ask the vet ahead of time how much it would cost to heal her.

So... one gastric torsion surgery, two days of IV's, and three nights at the vet's later, we picked up our dog who came home with about 15-20 stitches in her belly, a shaved leg for her IV, two bottles of pills, and special dog food costing over $2 a can... all for a whopping total of $1,200.  Whew.  Never thought I'd spend that much on a dog.

We tell her she's lucky it happened so quickly because if we'd had a week to find out the cost and say goodbye to her, we'd probably have let her go.  We just can't afford to be spending that much money on a dog, as much as we love her.  Add this to the vet bill when she ate rat poison and we've got one expensive pooch.

But, gotta love her.

I thought her new name was stop saw?! :) Glad pup is doing okay... and glad for Molly that you didn't have a week to make a decision.... ha! Though I completely understand what you are saying; we don't have money for that kind of expense for a dog either. Sad, but true!
